Why we have to oppose this war

Standing Together's national co-director Alon-Lee Green writes to supporters:

I’m writing to you between air raid sirens – sirens that have continued each day of this war, which is nearing its third week. As we shelter from missiles multiple times a day with no idea when the uncertainty will end, we need to ask who this war serves.

When Netanyahu tells us that this was inevitable, we should remember that he said the same thing during the last war with Iran in June. And when that war was over, he called it a “historic victory that will stand for generations.” Yet here we are once again, in another round of bloodshed, waged by Trump and Netanyahu, only eight months later. I don’t trust that Netanyahu cares about the interests of ordinary people – not Israelis, Palestinians, or Iranians. And I don’t trust that Netanyahu is telling us the truth about this war. In the end it is the people, across the Middle East, who pay the price for the decisions of extremists in power.

The people of Iran deserve freedom from the oppression and tyranny of the current regime, which they’ve fought so hard against for decades. But when water desalination plants, power plants, and residential neighborhoods are bombed and destroyed it harms ordinary people most. Iranians deserve to live in a democracy and without repression – they also deserve to live without fear of being killed in an airstrike.

We must not accept war as the only answer or the default option. Especially when it comes from politicians who have shown time and time again that they do not care about their own people and basic human rights. This situation is not normal, and all of us across the region deserve better. We must resist this reality and fight for a future of life, for all of us.

We want to invite you to a special webinar on the subject of war with Iran happening on Sunday 14 March with Iranian historian and author Arash Azizi and member of Standing Together’s national leadership Sally Abed. They’ll discuss what’s happening in Iran and in Israel, what the people on the ground want, and how we can stand in solidarity with a people’s fight for freedom – from Iran to Israel and Palestine.

Register for the webinar happening on Sunday, March 15 — 5pm UK time

Our shelter campaign is continuing in full force. Just yesterday we were able to install several mobile shelters in the Negev and help unrecognized Bedouin-Palestinian communities who until now had nowhere to run from missiles. In the last war with Iran we installed 20 shelters, and this time around we’re continuing to bring more protection to vulnerable communities. This campaign couldn’t have happened without thousands of donors who have already given – but the work isn’t over, and several unrecognized communities are still in need. Help us keep providing life-saving shelter.
