Standing Together co-director arrested on anti-war protest

Standing Together’s national co-director Alon-Lee Green was arrested on an anti-war protest in Tel Aviv last night (Saturday 4 April), along with fellow activist Nadav Oren. Fortunately, he was subsequently released without charge.

This is the latest in a wave of arrests of anti-war activists. 22 protesters were arrested throughout Israel during protests on 28 March, including 13 on one demonstration in Tel Aviv.

The arrests highlight the increasingly authoritarian role of the police, which is overseen by the ministry headed by the fascist Itamar Ben Gvir.

When it comes to the epidemic of violent crime in Palestinian communities, the police say there’s nothing they can do. But when they want to disrupt and repress anti-war and anti-occupation protest, they spring into action.

As Alon-Lee noted when he spoke in London in February, the risks faced by Jewish and Palestinian citizens seeking to resist are not equal: “If I confront them, maybe the police will arrest me […] It’s okay – I will get released the next day. If a Palestinian citizen confronts them, they might get shot.”

Standing Together provides a political home for both Jews and Palestinians seeking to resist Netanyahu’s regime. We must do whatever we can to support their struggles.
