Hebron faces military siege
25,000 Palestinians are under curfew and face incursions and raids from Israeli soldiers.
Standing Together writes [21 January]:
For the third consecutive day, the Israeli military is carrying out a large-scale operation in Hebron. Approximately 25,000 Palestinians are under curfew, confined to their homes and surrounded by military checkpoints, concrete barriers, and armed soldiers stationed on rooftops.
As part of this operation, Israeli forces have reportedly conducted home raids, made arrests, and instilled fear and uncertainty across the area, while over a dozen of shops and schools have been forced to close. At the same time, a widespread power blackout, now stretching into its third day, has left entire communities without heating, refrigeration, lighting, or the ability to charge phones or contact emergency services.
The military justifies its actions by invoking vague claims of dismantling “terror infrastructure” and seizing illegal weapons, but the reality unfolding on the ground tells a different story: this is about domination, subjugation, and using overwhelming force to disrupt every aspect of Palestinian daily life, to humiliate and destabilize entire communities.
And while this reality may be routine for those enforcing it, for the people living under it, it is dehumanising, violent, and unbearable. It is a total suppression of a people’s ability to live freely, safely, and with dignity in their own land. This is the machinery of occupation in action. No one should be forced to live like this.
