Bedouin-Palestinian activists protest house demolitions
Bedouin-Palestinian activists in Standing Together held a protest at the home of minister Amichai Chikli.
Standing Together writes:
This morning [24 April], we came to the home of minister Amichai Chikli carrying rubble from demolished homes of Bedouin-Palestinian citizens to protest the government’s plan to move Bedouin communities into state-recognized areas, which would require many to give up their claim to the land in exchange for partial compensation by the state. We came to say clearly that we won’t accept this racist legislation to displace citizens from their land under state pressure! All of us deserve to live in safety and dignity, without threat of being displaced from our homes.
Six of our activists were arrested during the action.
Rabea Alasam, a resident of the unrecognized Bedouin-Palestinian village of Khirbat al-Watan and member of Standing Together’s leadership, said before he was arrested: “Minister Chikli’s cruel plan is as terrible as this government. Its entire purpose is to constrict Bedouin life and make their lives more difficult. This government is trying to harm us in every way it can and to label us as enemies – we will not allow this harmful legislation to pass.”
